What is the core?
Many people primarily associate the term “core” with the abdominal muscles. In reality, it is a much broader muscular system that helps stabilize the trunk, pelvis, and spine.
The core includes not only the rectus and oblique abdominal muscles but also the deep stabilizing muscles, back muscles, pelvic muscles, and gluteal muscles.
Why is the core important?
A well-functioning core helps maintain stability during walking, sports, lifting loads, and everyday activities. It transfers force between the upper and lower body and helps protect the spine from excessive strain.
If the core is weakened, the risk of back pain, pelvic pain, or poor posture may increase. The body may then overload other muscles and joints.
How to strengthen the core?
Various exercises are used to strengthen the core. These include, for example, the plank, bridges, balance exercises, bodyweight exercises, or exercises with an ab roller.
Correct technique is more important than the difficulty of the exercise itself. If a person exercises incorrectly, they may worsen their problems instead of improving stability.
Back pain and exercise
For individuals with back pain, it is advisable to proceed with caution. It is not ideal to start immediately with demanding exercises without technical supervision and without knowing the cause of the difficulties.
It is advisable to first determine the source of the pain and establish a safe procedure accordingly. For some, targeted exercise will help; for others, it is necessary to first address a specific orthopedic finding.
